La population entière globale de gorilles de montagne, en danger critique d'extinction, ne vit que dans le massif des Virunga et de Bwindi, qui s'étendent sur certaines parties de la République Démocratique du Congo, de l'Ouganda et du Rwanda. Le Parc National des Virunga abrite environ un tiers de ces gorilles, qui résident dans les forêts denses situées sur les pentes luxuriantes des volcans des Virunga.
